LEARN's Student Support Services Department is committed to providing a wide range of high-quality, customized services in support of districts’ education of students with special needs.
Student Support Services is proud to offer programs across the educational continuum from elementary school, through middle school, high school and at the secondary transition level. The Department works to create a safe and nurturing educational environment that will foster the individual growth of all students. Department focus is on the cognitive, social, emotional and behavioral development of students through the use of a trans-disciplinary program. This environment values individual differences, while promoting respect ,responsibility, kindness, compassion, safety and good citizenship.
LEARN works closely with local districts to customize innovative programming to meet individual needs of students. Department services spring from the application of research-based practices, attention and listening to needs, the ability to problem-solve and bring together resources to address challenges, and a strong emphasis on collaborative partnerships and relationships. The Student Support Services Department maintains an open dialogue with all parties to best meet the needs of our region’s students.
Service and supports, both direct and consultative, are individualized in each program depending upon the needs of the students. Intensive services for students with autism or other developmental delays include application of the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which is a systematic method of increasing socially appropriate behaviors, and decreasing problematic behavior. Students with behavioral and emotional challenges receive clinical services in the areas of psychiatry, psychology, social work and behavioral support. In addition, the Department maintains a robust network of skilled professionals providing services such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and transition services. Services range in intensity from a single consultation to a LEARN-staffed Intensive Service Program.
The Student Support Services Department strives to build local capacity so students can ultimately remain within their home districts whenever appropriate programming can be designed and effectively implemented. To that end, the Department consults with district teachers and classroom staff, offers a wide range of professional development opportunities, and helps create specialized support frameworks so districts can embrace all members of their learning communities.
